light bulb moment
mads just posted a great project and blog
on a simple marking gauge to mark any board into two equal parts
http://lumberjocks.com/projects/94497
http://lumberjocks.com/mafe/blog/39123
this got me to thinking about how to do even more this way
so i went into the shop
and came up with the same concept to mark into 3 or 4 equal parts
it is very simple
just divide the space (from the stops on the ends) into what ever you want to
(you can do this as many times as you want)
here is what i came up with
(i used metric for the measurements as 12 can be divided by 3 or 4 easily)
first the center one that works to halve
then the 1/4 (for 4 equal pieces) mark that works from both sides
for 3 equal parts just use the 1/3rd hole
marking from both sides also
the one shown here is just a quickie from some scrap
(not as nice as mads by far)
but i think you get the idea
it can be divided as you like
and should be good for any size thickness board
i will probably make a few in different lengths
for edges to split boards into book-matches
or longer to rip boards into equal widths
all without the tedious measuring of odd boards
(especially using inches)
this should be close enough to run them on edge thru the planer
to get them all the same width
thank you mads
for all you share with us
