Project Information

Just a simple sectional bowl made with a router and templates as a gift. Woods are walnut and maple and the finish is butcher block oil. Nothing complicated but a fun and quick gift project. The white crockery was purchased at crate and barrel for a song. The current photos are after a year of use, so it has held up very well.

Nice bowl. Did you use an extension to rout it that deep?

Yes. Definitely. I needed to use an extension to rout the bowl this deeply.

Nice bowl. Where did you buy the template

The bowl is 16 3/4" in diameter. The template and bit are from the "CMT Bowl and Tray System." This is Rockler part number 26819.

Thanks for the comments.

I love the design the template allows you to make, but $113 seems a bit much for the kit. Even with the router bit and extension. I noticed the template is made of MDF. Do you think it is sturdy enough to hold up over the years and how hard do you think it would be to make different templates…I know they are made on a CNC machine.

Larry,

I'd agree with you for that price. The bit and extension are high quality and I think the templates would hold up over the long haul but $113 is not cheap. Amazon has the system right now for under $100, which is about what I paid for it, as I recall. I doubt that making a template would be that difficult - just a drill, jigsaw or scroll saw and some file work. However, if you already have the bit and extension, Mcfeely's sells the template for under $15.

Finally, if you need something fancy and custom, I have access to a CNC router and could whip it up for you, although shipping mdf to Hawaii might be a bit expensive….

Hey Richard, I will check out the templates on Mcfeely's…don't think I have looked at their site before. Who knows, I just might take you up on your offer…yea the shipping is a bit high, but we have learned to live with it…only way we can find items we want or need is online. Have you made any templates like this with the CNC?

Larry,

It is easy to make templates of that type out of MDF using the CNC router. The only limiting factor is the size of the inside curve radius relative to the bit diameter.
