Project Information

This is a bandsaw box made as a gift for family members whose last name starts with the letter B. Aside from one practice piece, this was my first bandsaw box. It's made of white oak, red oak, Honduran mahogany, African mahogany (knobs) and zebra wood. The zebrawood is a veneer glued onto the face of the drawers to add some contrast. The knobs were turned on the lathe out of African mahogany so dark it almost looks like walnut. Finish is a couple coats of blonde shellac, Deft lacquer spray, and a coat of Ren wax. C&C welcomed.

Awesome creation for your first band saw box! I especially like the zebra wood veneer on the drawer fronts. I don't recall seeing that anywhere before. You're own idea?

Forgive me if I ought to know the answer, but why shellac and then lacquer and then wax?

Spencer - good questions.

Regarding the veneered drawer fronts, I had seen others use different wood species for the drawers, or at least drawer fronts. I don't know if they used veneer, but I wanted something to make it stand out and had some zebra wood veneer, and figured it would be the best way to accomplish that.

Regarding the finish, I usually use shellac as a basecoat because I like the depth and tone of the finish it imparts. Whatever finish I use, it always looks better with shellac underneath. Plus a couple coats of shellac is an easy way to build up a finish. I finish with something on top of shellac because I've never been able to get a smooth finish with just shellac. I always end up with lines and streaks where the strokes overlap because shellac dries so fast. I usually go to arm-r-seal (or seal-a-cell, I always get those two ridiculously confusing names mixed up) over the shellac, but I needed to finish this quickly, so I went with lacquer. Why Renaissance wax on top? For the sheen and fingerprint resistance. That's my thought process anyways …

I am still in awe of the results with the zebrawood drawer front veneers… You may not have heard the slap from where you are, but I did slap my forehead as I said, "Why didn't I think of that!"

Your explanation of your finishing steps is as good as any…

I can see that this idea can be used for many letters of the alphabet…not sure about all… but since my family name begins with "B" I already know how I'll make mine!

Thanks for showing your work and explaining how and why you did what you did… it is part of the pleasure and value in visiting the Lumberjocks community.

Well, I'm glad someone got something out of it!! I'm a bit challenged design-wise, so I always get my ideas from sites like this. Glad I could contribute something …
