Project Information

Thanks to all for feedback on offset sections of the top tray in an earlier forum post, & to Blackie for reminding me on cutting sequence for the front & drawers when I had a brain freeze. This one has been delivered to the gallery & 3 more in process for Nephews gifts.
Birds eye maple & walnut, although disappointed that there weren't many "eyes".
About 9" x 4 1/2" by 5 1/2" thick. Finished with 4 coats of Arm-R-Seal.

While I really don't like sanding with so many grits, it does pay off with a really smooth finish.

Thanks for looking.

I really like this box. I had for got all about the tray boxes you and Blackie have been making…I think I will add a few of those if you don't mind….. will you please tell us the cutting sequence on front and drawers. I would think you would cut the drawer out first. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Thanks for comments -
Larry - those cuts were where I had the brain freeze & Randy helped me out… Cut off both the back & front. Then tape the front back on & cut out the drawers. Everything is then aligned.

With both the front & back off, you're pretty much good to go cutting out however you want the top tray.

I should also note that Randy is light years ahead of what I'm doing, this is really only the 2nd valet for me. Randy's also doing a hybrid with slab drawer fronts & butt & mitered outside box in addition to hidden drawers ,etc.

Thanks for clearing up the cutting sequence on that one….I guess you could also glue the front on instead of taping…gotta think about that one

Larry - gluing the front back on might be option, but you'd have to do your top tray cuts before you glue front (or back) on.

I use my Ridgid EB4424 oscillating sander for the 1st two sanding grits, before I hand sand. So I keep the front off until I've completed that work.

You are so correct..I forgot about sanding the top part. Sometimes I get into a hurry and miss the "little" things. Again, thanks for making that a bit more clearer in my minds eye.

I think I'd use this sequence (because I don't understand cutting off the front and immediately taping it back on for cutting the drawers out):
1-cut off the back,
2-cut out the drawers (solid blocks at that point),
3-cut off the front
4-cut out the trays and sand the insides
5-close the kerf on the front by clamping(closing kerf on box is optional; I think I wouldn't do it by clamping cuz it just makes the drawer space tighter with possible need to reduce the drawer; I would use sawdust and glue.)
6-glue on the front and back & sand everything flush
7-drawers: cut off the fronts and backs; cut out drawer cavities & sand; glue on fronts and backs

sawtooth, given the quality of your work, anything would work! A very good suggestion & alternative to what I did.
Thanks.

I posted a couple of pics of band saw boxes I made where the front IS cut off… but then discarded. The goal was to have the drawers protrude 1/2". More 'artsy' and not as functional as a valet-tray box, but an interesting variation on the band saw box motif.
