Project Information

This small box is made of 3/8" walnut with mitered corners. The Burl inlay is a "sandwich" of 1/8" Baltic Birch between walnut burl veneer and maple veneer. This is the second box I have attempted with a hardwood "lipping"; this one is striped maple. The inlay banding is a commercial banding; and the lining of the box is a dark green butter suede; and the finish is several coats of Lacquer. The hinge used on the box is a "slot" hinge from Craft Inc., and the Cards are special civil war style cards with their own special box. They are "fit" into the caddy for a nice finished look. The challenge of course was fitting the double miters on the lipping. I cut them to rough length, then tweaked them using the disc sander. The vertical lipping is glued in place after the top is separated from the body of the box to provide some wiggle room; as one end can then be just squared off. This was one of the first projects I have done using my new veneer press built from Joe woodworkers veneer press kit.

The press is the first one featured on this link. I was really happy with how simple this system was to build and how well it worked. Total cost of the project was just under $300.00.

Dave,
Lovely little box. Nicely done. The heavier edging works really well here in the curly maple. The lined interior finishes off a charming design.
