Project Information
When our first child was on the way, I made this contemporary style dresser changing table that can convert to a standard 5 drawer dresser. A curved front top drawer and retractable top panel occupy the changing table space when converted to dresser mode.

Design:
- The top panel is hinged on two sliding dovetail blocks, so the top can be opened up, then slid down behind the dresser when in changing table mode. See picture 4.
- The curved front top drawer is removeable to reveal the changing table.
- A 12" deep extension folds out on a piano hinge, to make the changing table wider, and to allow the parent to stand right up against the table, to reduce back strain from leaning over.
- Drawers are 1/2" baltic birch, assembled with dovetails cut using a homemade dovetail jig. Picture 3
- The curved front for the top drawer is kerf bent 3/4 ply on five form blocks. The form blocks were aligned with three splines. Picture 5.
- Carcase is 3/4 plywood with maple edge banding. Picture 6.
- The face frame for the drawers and much of the carcase joinery is dovetails, to strengthen it since there is little internal structure.
- Finished with grain filler, then multiple coats of white water based paint, sprayed on with an automotive spray gun.
