Project Information

I cut down a tree on my pond dam and cut this lumber from it, stickered and dried it, then built this box. Dimensions: 7 1/2×9 x 3 3/4". Raised panel (done with the tablesaw) lid. Shipwright wooden hinge just under 1/4" thick. Walnut splines. Ipe lid lift. Oak ply bottom. Finished with rubbed on shellac.

Any guesses as to what wood this is?

Thanks Andy, I may have to give that a try, I would have never guessed Mimosa, though I have it growing all around me I've never seen it cut, that grain does resemble redbud a bit though.

I don't guess I have ever seen any mimosa. My uncle was milling some once but I was thinking his was darker. Doesn't matter, it is pretty and as usual you have done a fine job with it. It love the water too. Good game.

Another nice one Andy. 1/4" is getting pretty thin on the hinges, I'm guessing you've gone to a thin kerf blade and thinner pin material? In my last set of boxes I used a thin skill saw blade and 1/16th brass was a perfect fit.
I have some mimosa veneer somewhere but with would never have guessed. It has a lovely glow to it.

Andy, I just happen to have some wood just like that. I got it from a guy who mills yard trees in Chico, CA. He told me it was Mimosa. I was told by a turner to watch the dust. It can cause allergic reactions. Great box by the way. Of course that is expected!!

I like that a lot. Being that you processed it from tree to box makes it all the more special. Is it a chainsaw mill, or band saw, or something else. Either way very nice

I have always wondered what mimosa would look like milled. The fleck in the quarter sawn face is gorgeous!

Thanks for all the kind words and wood ID guesses.

Paul, I cut the kerf with a very thin kerf Skilsaw blade and used coat hanger wirs for the "pin".

Kaleb, Milled this with my 17" Grizz bandsaw.

I'm always looking for something new and different (or difficult!)
