Project Information
These are definitely the last of this type of carving I am doing this year. I am a bit "driftwood-ed" out after completing several .
The white one started of with a natural shaped mouth and the carving was constructed around it. The wood suggested a ghostly figure and so I followed that in a light hearted way. The result was a cross between Casper and a Genie.
The long thing wormy face was not the easiest to make. Rusty nails, wormy holes, sand, grit and soft wood did not make the task easy. I nearly gave up a number of times but sheer cussedness kept me going. The carving knives had to be sharpened about every 10 minutes as the wear on the blades was extreme.
The small face was a honey to make. The wood carved well and took fine detail. The wormy hole on the perimeter made it a little fragile but I am pleased with the outcome. I needed to use special knives with rounded sloping cutting edges to get the best cuts.
