Project Information

I am a wood addict. I love finding unusual pieces and shining them up to see what is underneath. Every now and then get a pretty big surprise. The first coat of poly on these made fireworks go off in the shop. Cool stuff.

These two boxes are made from figured maple and cherry burl. They are five by ten ish. Six coats of wipe on poly, rubbed and waxed. The first box has a curved top that I did on the table saw by making several cuts and changing the angle each time, then sanding out the hard lines.

With wood discoveries like these, your addiction is perfectly understandable. That's the good news. The bad news is that such addiction is probably Incurable. Best wishes in your struggles with your addiction; and, thanks for sharing.

Fantastic wood. I bet it was a heck of a fireworks show too. You did a great job on the tops-the curved and the contour-and the grain is to die for. This kind of wood is priceless!

Great find on the woods and awesome way to use them.

I would have guessed the top was black walnut.

You certainly do find cool wood, and you definitely have the skills to make it come to life. That's some amazing depth in those finishes.

I have a fair sized horde of aged, and mildly spalted - highly figured maple that looks exactly like what you have here. What I have used to be an old burly maple stump that got chopped up and left at a burn pit years ago. It might look like bits of an old rotten stump, but ya slice it up and it's nothing but eye candy! Fun stuff to work with too.
