Project Information

Last February I purchased a pair of rough bronze router plane castings on eBay for $15. This has been a work in progress ever since.

This is how it started out..

I made a larger base for the main body out of rosewood and the knobs were turned out of more rosewood on my drill press.

I used a small Stanley depth adjuster knob, infilled with rosewood for the depth adjuster and wrapped more rosewood around some brass for the blade holder.

I still need to sharpen and hone the blade and I have no actual idea if this will work or fail spectacularly yet but all indications show it is solid and should work out great lol.

Thanks for looking!

That's fantastic and what a great deal on those bronze castings. And I hate to ask because I don't want to sound critical in any way, but have you considered grinding down the castings and polishing them?

Thanks Mos and no I cannot wait to use this thing!

Rick - The casting has been filed and polished it just sat for a while since the last polishing and has aged a bit since. I decided to keep the patina for now. I kinda like the "aged" look of it.

A beautiful tool Eric and nice work on the knobs and getting it all together so perfect. I'm sure it will work well for you. I wouldn't mind having a router plane myself, but they are way too expensive. Yours is a better alternative.

Wow. The brass and rosewood have a great old fashioned Victorian look.

How old are the castings? Beautiful job. I agree with leaving the patina. I love the aged look as well :)

I like it. It's got a kind of steampunk feel to it. Never thought I would describe a tool that way and consider it a compliment. Great job.

outstanding. You have made a very nice tool out of those old castings. The infill on the adjuster and rosewood around the blade holder are real nice touches. I'm sure it will work real well, and you'll look good working at the same time!

Eric that's looking sweet. I can't believe after all that work you've managed to hold off honing the iron so you can take it on its inaugural test run.
