Sharpening Station Build #1

A while back I purchased some whetstones from LV. Up till now I have been doing the scary sharp method with sandpaper. That works just fine but it can get pretty pricey over time and I finally realized I wasn't saving any money not investing in some good sharpening stones.

Wood Rectangle Hardwood Gas Flooring

The thing is… just about every surface in my shop is almost always cluttered with project spew of some kind so setting these up has been put to the side since they arrived. I have determined that I need a dedicated spot for these to go if I am going to ever use them. I would also like the option to have them always out so sharpening isn't the "All Stop" event that it is right now which pushes me to use my tools way past where they should have been resharpened. Yet keep the option to put it away if need be.

What I have come up with is a slab pond/table that will break down if I want to or just use the top clamped to my workbench.

No real plan here just playing it by ear as I go. Hopefully it works out the way it looks in my head lol.

I decided to use the 2 cedar legs that didn't make the cut for my workbench for the top of this. Cedar is fairly rot resistant and play well with moisture better than most woods out there.

I started by edge jointing the 2 legs… have I mentioned how much i love this vice?

Wood Automotive tire Hardwood Gas Bumper

Then I marked out for the pond on one end. Cut the edges and drilled "turn" holes in the corners so I can finish the cut on the bandsaw.

Wood Flooring Hardwood Wood stain Plank

Wood Plank Hardwood Rectangle Lumber

And finally glued that all up.

Now to wait for that to dry then start on the cedar pond that will slip into that hole. Stay tuned.

Super interested to see how this turns out. My stones are just sitting out like a nuisance like yours have been. Keep us posted.

Very interested as well. May I suggest a recirculating pump in your great idea?

I'm horsing around with a prototype and the recirculating pump is quite effective.

It seems to present fresh abrasives as the swarf is washed away.

Corian works great for a laminate "pond".

Can be worked with carbide tipped wood tools. Circular saw with carbide blade.
Pond pump is a great idea!

Glued with epoxy. I use West System 3.

1200sqft Barn Shop Setup ..part 1

Well.. It has been a while since my last blog post and wanted to catch everyone up on what's going on around the shop.

In February I purchased a house just outside of town on 1.17 acres of land. The house needed (still does) a lot of work but it came with a 1200sqft pole barn with a loft! The loft is about half the size of the down stairs so it has roughly 1800sqft of usable space in it.

This is a serious upgrade from the 2 car garage I had in my last rental and heaps better than my tiny 1 car garage shop I started out with in Base Housing lol.

Here it is from the outside..

Now.. The has some intetesting history to it lol. The previous owners (so the story goes) had a rental tenant living there who decided to convert the space under the loft into a grow operation. So that area had been walled off, sealed and insulated.

Property Wood Shade Wall Couch

So finally after many months of house renovations, family drama and general life dustractions I have begun work tearing down the grow room walls and reclaiming that space and opening up the downstairs shop space.

Over the last 3 days I have removed and saved intact all the wall materials. I am going to recycle most of it in the house renovation to save on the budget and whatever isn't used there will go to use as wall benches.

The general layout I'm planning is for the space under the loft will be my general handtool and wall bench area and the garage door half will be for any future machines etc.

Here is where I've left off for today. Pardon the mess. With the house a construction zone I'm having to keep the majority of my household goods in the barn for now. On tap for tomorrow is to migrate as much as I can up into the loft space.

The handtoolin shop under the loft.. I plan to install one or two windows along the side wall to let natural light and air in. I have 2 in the house I am replacing so they will be perfect for here.

And a quick tour of the rest of the space.

5 yrs later. Let's catch up a bit...

Well it's been a busy and chaotic few years since I last posted about my new shop. Would love to say there has been a massive change and it's all set up and ready for work but alas that is not the case.

I have been trying to finish my home renovation before playing in here but that is taking much longer than I had originally planned and with the cost of framing lumber at rediculous levels it is basically on hold atm.

So what now? Well time to play of course!

Over the last few years the barn/shop space has become the home for all the random detritus that accumulated during the house build and is a complete S show atm.

Wood Art Event Machine Engineering

That all started to change last week when I finally allowed myself to do something I wanted to do here at the house rather than something I needed to do. It has been far too long since I just had fun with something and it is needed.

Last week I did a bunch of cleaning with much more left to do but I did get enough floor space revealed to get a ladder in and hang some LED shop lights and wire them up.

Table Wood Floor Flooring House

Building Light Electricity City Wood

Much better! Now that I can actually see what I am doing. I can hopefully get this place cleared out and begin the process of organization and setting it all up how I want it and make it functional. Stay tuned folks. Who knows where this is going to lead from here.

Space is Clean! Time to get organized!

Well today was a pretty productive day in the "new" shop space. I was able to get the space fully cleared out and swept. Then emptied all the boxes of tools and parts etc onto all the table spaces so I can see what I have to put away and nothing is being hidden inside a box.

The most exciting part was finally getting my roubo workbench in place and cleaned up. I will need to resurface the top but need to get my planes tuned up and sharp first. Otherwise it is holding strong 8 years after I finished it!

Table Wood Cabinetry Floor Hardwood

Then tonight I did a rough sorting of everything so tomorrow I can start finding homes for everything and it will all be together in like groups.

Wood Motor vehicle Gas Automotive design Machine

Wood Table Machine Engineering Hardwood

Wood Gas Tool Automotive exterior Bumper

And a heap of plane parts and half restored tools..

Wood Drill Hand tool Recreation Table

I also was able to get my drill press area set up. Turns out a 32 gallon aquarium stand works out perfectly as a drill press stand! Pretty stoked about that.

Cabinetry Wood Building House Shelving

Now tomorrow I will most likely make full use of this pegboard wall above this wall bench space. I man it was already there so might as well right?

Wood Shelf Toy Shelving Flooring

I have a feeling this space will be pretty fluid for a bit while I figure out how I like to work in it and then adjust tools storage to that but am pretty excited to finally get these out of boxes and back into use!

Stay Tuned for more….

Looking mighty good, that's a fantastic space! And your tool collection makes me drool a bit ;-) Glad you're back around and looking forward to shop progress and future projects. I browsed your old projects and I like your style :)

Organizing the new shop.. Hanging Tools up Finally!

It's been a busy couple of days here in the shop. I am trying to get all my tools in a spot of their own so I can then go through them and get them cleaned up (again). Over the past 5 years of being stored in a drafty barn they have all acquired a nice coating of surface rust that needs dealing with but before I can do that I need to be able to see them and have a spot to put them away afterwards. That has been my focus so far this week and I am nearly done with finding homes for all my handplanes.

First though I decided it was time to actually hand this old Navy shop box from back in my Navy days. I plan to use it as a paint locker since it is heavy gauge metal and having all my paints and other chemicals in a metal box feels safer than putting them anywhere else. Let me tell you….. this was not an easy task lol. The empty box weighs well over 50lbs but did come predrilled with mounting holes on the back. Used a piece of ply to bridge the 24" on center gap between studs on the back wall and propped it up on a rickety bathroom shelf fixture I have knocking about that put it at the right height and after a few puckering moments had it hung. Hopefully I won't have to move that thing again!

Wood House Art Building Gas

Then it was onto the handplanes. I have this huge pegboard wall that was already in the space when I bought it. I know a lot of folks have a love hate relationship with pegboard but it's here, it's massive so I am using it. At least until I finish my tool cabinet (a project that has spanned nearly a decade at this point).

One of the items I cleared out of this space was an old queen sized box spring that I took apart to salvage as much wood from it as I could. One of the long top side pieces was just perfect for a simple hanging plane till. Just needed some staples cleaned up and a few nails and it was ready for some holes and leather cord.

That took care of most of the bench and block planes plus my 2 router planes. That left an assortment of odd ones that don't hang well from my new till. These will require their own specialty shelves and hangers.

First up was a "cleat" for my 45. I just adjust the fence to the stretcher across the top and it sits up there just perfectly. I also made a simple shelf for my 78 underneath it.

Next up were the blades and accessories for the 45. I have a little over 2 complete blade sets but one of them has been living in a small cardboard box for years. It was time to change that and make them a proper box. For this I used some drawer bottom material and just built out the box and then cut off the lid. Worked a charm. I will eventually build a new box for the 2 old boxes that are falling apart.

I have 1 more plane to make a shelf for which is my radius plane and then it will be onto my Chisels. I am actually having a lot of fun building all the tool holders to use on the pegboard wall. It has given me some ideas on how to handle the fitting out of my tool cabinet which is at that stage now.

That however is for another day. Stay tuned!

I really like the holder for the spoke shaves and scrapers. Just the other day I had all of mine out wondering how in the hell to organize them. I think you just answered that for me.
