Project Information

Walnut and padauk with a light taste of carving.
The bottom is lined with gator leather and the finish is lacquer.

I went to Lowes yesterday morning and was surprised to find out that that are no longer carrying the Deft spray can lacquer I use. Disappointing since they are fairly close by. I paid less than $6 a can for it and when i got home and searched online at Rockler, Amazon, etc I saw their prices to be outrageous at $10 to $12.99 a can.

Called Home Depot and they had it in stock so I went there this morning and bought the 23 cans they had in stock. $5.97 a can..Screw Rockler and the other rip offs.

Greg; another great box. How many coats of Deft do you put on the boxes?

I like the change Greg but don't abandon the wildly sculpted style completely. You have a real niche there.
Nice!!

Monte…it keeps my mind spinning just trying to come up with different designs…but, hey…spinning is fun…kind of like a brain lathe.

Bill…the lacquer works good for me…but i just started experimenting with some additional finishes.

MichaelA…I really like the padauk alot also…a shame it darkens with time… have you tried home depot for the deft lacquer? They had it when I went there today.

JoeyG..Thanks…! .how have you been? I haven't seen you posting in a while…Good to see you back…! Did you and your wife have your new baby yet?

amagineer…thanks. I only used 3 coats on this box. Normally I use more but on this box I was trying to get a different look.

Paul…the change in box styles is ONLY to get a variety and to add some cheaper boxes for the shows….I would NEVER abandon the sculpted style I have been developing. I would get too stagnant and bored if I could not be creative and different

I like this subtly sculpted box. I do like the smooth finish better than the blasted finish. Keep us appraised as to which seems to sell best.
Hard to understand why the price can vary so widely for the same product (Deft rattle can). It almost always pays to shop around.

I like it! For a "simple and quick" box, it has a very refined and elegant look.

i like it greg, yes being creative and trying new styles is very refreshing, if there is someone who likes it and buys it, then as you well know…keep some on hand, and since they will cost less, then you are appealing to all, not just folks with deep pockets.

Another beautiful box and style Greg. A side view gives it a coming or going effect. Nicely done. Yes I agree you need variety, but I agree with others, the little critter boxes just seem to catch your eye. My home depot stopped carrying the Deft. But Woodcraft has it for $13.00. HAh

That is another beautiful box…walnut always looks great no matter what it is used in I really like it and your sculpting only makes it look better. Padauk looks great with the walnut as a contrasting wood.

Nice box Greg, have you tried a wipe on poly? I went from the daft lacquer to the wipe on and love it. I'm now making my own 50 /50 blend so much cheaper.

Another beautiful design which will no doubt be well received. Have you ever considered using Bloodwood instead of paduak as I understand Bloodwood retains its red color whereas paduak sometimes has a tendency to turn brown? Just curious.

Quick n simple…. huh… lol Nice, as always. I agree with you about Rockler/Woodcraft, and who knows how many others. They seem to all want to get rich fast.

Greg:
another winner..
I am using Ace Premium Enamel Clear Gloss for my boxes.
Often find it on sale for under $2.00
dries quickly and gives a nice gloss finish.
I don't know who makes it because it is their brand but I find it acceptable and the price is right
Find a local store, make friends with a clerk and have them alert you when they place it on sale.
Keep on sculpting
I find the sanding to be the most tedious..
Any hints or short cuts for us????

Andy…thanks. the smoother and sanded finished show the grain better but the variety of styles and textures is just as important when selling these at shows. It always is interesting to watch what boxes different people are attracted to when they enter the booth display. I have been doing a lot of shopping around for the Deft lacquer and all prices are higher than Lowes and HD.

Tefinn..thanks. Practice and making so many boxes definitely makes them happen faster and also keeps the creative juices flowing.

grizzman…I have been fortunate to have good sales at the shows and know it is important to continually have a varied selection of wood used in the boxes and varied styles. My worst fear would be getting stagnant or too common.

DoubleDD…thanks…! The coming and going effect I like best in when it comes to the show and I see it going after a happy customer has purchased it.

aussiedave…thank you…I agree, the walnut is such a nice wood and combines with the padauk so well. I only wish I could find some of that beautifully grained walnut and burl around here. I only seem to locate the plain grained walnut.

Randy…I have used wipe on poly but it takes so much linger to dry. After I apply a coat of finish in my shop I am usually immediately creating dust in some other fashion…so I need a fast drying solution or a separate area to apply finishes.

Bentwood…the elves are a well kept secret because they make cookies also…

Ken90712…much appreciated….

Hillbillyshooter…I have used bloodwood but I have not been able to locate a good quality source lately. The Bloodwood I purchased in the past had a very deep rich red color to it…and what I have run across lately seems so much pinkish and lighter in color.

Charles…thanks…it is fun, fun…fun.

Roger…Rockler is good for some items but they sure squeeze you on others. The quick and simple does get easier with practice.

abie…I will have to try the Ace enamel if it comes in a Satin finish. Price is not the concern, unless someone is way overcharging what it is worth, but quality most certainly is a #1 priority.
