Project Information

This is an ottoman tray / large serving tray made from mostly african mahogany in my signature tray style. It's a rather large serving tray / ottoman tray at 20" x 30" and incorporated an inlayed compass rose design from tiger maple and wenge. It won 3rd place in the veneering/ marquetry furniture category at this years Design in Wood in San Diego, which I was quite proud of considering the stiff competition. Thanks for looking.

Great work all around! Congrats on the high place at Design in Wood that is really a high bar. I really like your tray style…nice flowing curves and great 4 way bookmatch on the background veneer. I know how difficult those compound angles can be to get tight. Is that an epoxy finish on the inside?

I checked out your website too…wow! You should post some of your other work here too Matt! We could all learn from your experience!

Matthew,
Yes and no on the epoxy finish. After sanding everything down, I begin the finishing process by applying a coat of laminating epoxy and then squeegee it off. It serves to fill the pores/voids and stabilize the crotch (important to prevent any future cracking in film finishes). I then sand it with 400 grit and spray ~(3) coats of target's water based lacquer and finish with abralon pads. Again, thanks everyone for the compliments.

Beautiful tray! I couldn't possibly put my coffee spoon and spill sugar on that tray. Keep up the nice work.

Ok, I searched LJ's for serving trays to get some ideas for a couple I'm wanting to build soon. This is excellent, however I don't think I have the skill, time, or tooling for something like this. Great work.
