Project Information

I made some bigger boxes a while back out of some figured hickory, and these were made from the cutoffs of those boxes. They were the ends of the boards and full of stress cracks and planer snipe. These were too pretty to burn on the fire, and I knew it would be time consuming to stabilize them, so I matched them up with birds-eye maple fitted with ebony finials.

These little guys took about five times longer to build than normal, but I think I might have heard the boards say 'thank you' as I rubbed out the wipe on poly with wax.

Maybe this is why I always have to clean my shop after shop cleaning day.

Very nice boxes, I really like the shape of the lids, kind of Asian looking. How do you cut the lids to that shape?

Hey dave, I cut a square roughly an inch thick and an inch bigger than the box, make a kerf sized shelf that drops int the box.
Flip the whole thing upside down with the lid in place and mark where the outside of the box meets the lid.
Cut an angle from the top to the mark, (usually between 30 and 45 degrees).
Mark out an arch from corner to corner on the angle cut for reference, I use a ten inch pie plate… pretty high tech.
Mark out an X connecting opposite corners, and grind away with a power rasp.

Some people like to set up a jig for the bandsaw to make this shape, and I have heard of some using a drum sander. I like the noise and dust of my power carver, it's a lot more fun in my book.

Next time I'll take pics of the process, because my explanations aren't very good. Been married over ten years and my wife still has to have things translated at times.

Oh I really like those boxes… I also would like to see pictures of how you made the tops. I know what you mean about the feeling of making something nice from that throw away piece of wood

Loving those lids! I'd also like to see a few pictures of your process. That birdseye maple worked really well for a 3-D design such as this. Very nice work indeed.

Love those lids. What a great way to put your hickory cut offs to use! And thanks for explaining how you formed the lids… something to think about.
