Project Information

This board started out as a concept that I did not quite understand, and after completion I ended up more confused as to why it works.

Started out with 2 inch thick curly maple 30×12, ripped down the middle into two pieces 6×30.

Center stripe inserted of 2 purple heart strips 1×2 x 30 and one central stripe of curly maple at 1×30 x 2.

A diagonal cut was made, Didn't pay attention to what the angle was, probably should have made a note of that.

Made several identical strips and flipped every other one to form a zig zag patten

After glue up, reflattened the board and cut new diagonals in the zig zag pattern, the flipped every other one, making a kind of wavy zag.

Didn't like the look of it, so I flipped every other two, and it came out pretty cool.

Still don't understand why it works.

Hope you like it, sorry if the instructions are confusing, next time I will take pictures. Pictures are better.

I like what you came up with.
Have you read the Clarence Rannefeld book on the subject or seen this blog?

Just checked out that blog, Might try it that way next time. This board was supposed to be made into segments for a vase, but I didn't have the balls to make the mitered staves, so I left it as a board.

@degoose… have you ever tried "third generation"? something else I didn't have the guts to try.

I love it!

Like you, I have found that gluing up pieces of wood, cutting them apart, and gluing them back together can yield some wonderful surprises. This concept works great for turning also.
