Project Information

I have way too many cutting boards sitting around the house and it has been way too hot to be hanging out in the garage for extended periods of time. So, I decided to try out making a segmented pen. I glued this up a few days ago. Two 1/4" pieces of bloodwood and one 1/4" piece of yellowheart sandwiched between a really nice piece of cherry. I somehow managed to line up the grain on the cherry perfectly. I turned this tonight using the Easy Rougher and Easy Finisher. Sanded and finished with Hut Crystal Polish and a coat of Johnson's paste wax.

Every pen I make impresses everyone that learns I made it myself. My wife and I have a wooden thingy overflowing with pens I've made and each one is treasured Trust me, we are impressed with pens. Sometimes it's hard to grasp just how beautiful they are from pictures, and to be honest if you turn, its one of the first things most of us tried. Pens were like weed compared to the heroin of turning the first segmented bowl for us wood junkies. And every Christmas season, I order another round of pen innards, and learn to enjoy it all again, and like you said, they don't take all day, but are so satisfying when you're done and they actually write :) Enjoy the pens, display the pens, and don't you dare stop sharing yours with the rest of us.

The idea of turning a bowl scares the crap out of me. I'll get there one of these days. Thanks for the kind words and I will continue to post them as I make them.

Very nicely done. Every pen is a treasure. You'll get to bowls eventually, my better half has :).

One of these days I need to get her to post her stuff up here also :)

Very nice looking pen. What kit did you use? Always impressed with pens as I am working on them regularly myself, such a fun and varied item to do so much you can do in such a short period of time.
Look forward to seeing more.

Thank you! It's a Wall Street II pen kit from woodcraft. Not my favorite, but its all we had laying around except for slimlines.

wait 'till you use a small sheet of aluminum or copper as the insert piece. I've got one I did that with, cut the blank at an angle and glued in a piece of aluminum. looks like a lazy loop on it. All sorts of neat thing you can do when turning :)
