Project Information

This table was built for the same clients who commissioned the home theater in my previous post. It's all wenge, all the time. The top is actaully a double layer of wenge veneer over MDF. The edges and legs are solid. I also stained the whole thing to even out the color because the wenge veneer I got was a little to light to go with the solids.
They wanted a large table but a single table would have been overwhelming and really heavy. The curve between the 2 sections echos somewhat the curves in the entertainment center. See more at alancarterstudio.com.

I have wondering how Wenge would look as a full size piece of furniture vs. a small box etc…

It looks like it works well as long as the room is neutral or light tones. Nice Job!

wow that is pretty nice wood. its a great piece too. very original. did you find the same problem as The Wood Whisperer with the Wenge being very splintery and chippy?

Those look really good, Alan. I'm wanting to use some wenge on a project, but no one has an interest in it. I guess I'll have to make something for myself. I have little wenge veneer and want to use it with the white oak that I'm so fond of. Did you just use an ebony stain to match the colors?

Looks really nice. Love the contemporary look. I also want to know how was working with wange, I want to get some of it to try it out, it's such a beautiful wood and I want to do some project with it. Great job.

Yeah, wenge is reall splintery. Just look at it and it's like a porcupine in heat.
I used a black water based analine dye to even it out.

I've got some

big old

air dried

Tennnesse black walnut 10/4

slabs

that I'd like to make into a dining table.

this design would make it easier to carry.

Might fit in the back of my SUV.

Great curve to break up the heavy color. How many coats of finish or poly did you have to apply to the vaneer?

I think I applied 4-5 coats of spray lacquer.
