Project Information

I continue to explore new styles and designs for making purses and pocketbooks. Getting feedback from friends and family is a very beneficial part of the process. I like to think the designs are getting more refined and I do know that they are getting a bit easier to make. My latest effort was in the direction of a small clutch, so far the response has been good. It can also be used for sunglasses or just about anywhere a small case might be needed.

I have always liked the look of Zebrawood and on this project it really shines through. There is a slice of Wenge in the center to increase the overall thickness and add contrast. I use the small Soss barrel hinges, line the interior with felt and add a small mirror.

Wonders Perhaps it would be possible to design one for front pocket use the size of the USD folded lengthwise and some leather pockets for credit/business cards… I'd be happy to test your prototype and provide feedback if you decide to go that route :p Really do like the look of these! Thanks again for sharing…

I love Zebrawood. I was a few hours too late to a consignment furniture store, or I'd have more Zebrawood than I'd know what to do with. They sold a Zebrawood bedroom suite (king headboard and footboard, chest of drawers, two nightstands, and a dresser) for $1300. I almost cried.

That is a really cool design.

The zebrawood I have worked with seems very open grained/porous and is difficult to finish. Your finish looks super. Share your technique?

I have to agree that the Zebra is lovable. I like what you did with it a lot too.

Very nice! Did you use a CNC router, or templates? I've been making boxes for eyeglasses from flat stock with sliding lids, but I really like this style!

Thanks Guy for the kind words.

AtomJack- I did use a CNC router on these
Dusty56- I am a 56 model as well, this is the first one of this style, so I haven't tried to sell them yet, probably in the $100-150 range.
Gfadvm- Pretty straightforward technique all from a spray can. Sand with 80, 150 and 220. Apply several coats of sanding sealer lighting sanding after coat 3, wipe with microfiber cloth. Build finish by adding 3-5coats of lacquer lighting sanding as needed. One trick I use is to run hot hot water over the spray can can before spraying, it expands the contents creating a bit more pressure, the warm lacquer flows nicely, and it seems to try a tad faster. Since I am in Florida humidity is an issue, I spray in the shop and take the parts inside to dry. My house has that loopy lacquer smell at times, but that's the smell of progress.

Thanks for the finishing advice. Very similar to what I did BUT I didn't do the sanding sealer.

mgb_2x, I started to make one of these but I could not find any hinges I liked!

If you don't mind me asking, what hinges did you use and where get them?

You like Zebra wood … me too. Your project turned out beautifully.
