Project Information

This book stand is made from walnut with a tempered hardboard base. This stand can be used on a desk or on your lap. My other book stand works nice on a desk, but cannot be used when reading from your lap, as you would while sitting in a chair. It is angled at 30 degrees.

It is finished with a shellac seal coat and four coats of Waterlox applied with a wad of cotton cloth.

Beautiful, I just want to feel it. It looks like it was custom made just for that book… Hmm…

Beautiful job! I sure love the way walnut looks no matter how it is finished.

That looks really nice. I'm surprised how well the hardwood matches the walnut. Did you finish it or did they just match that well?

Kyle,

The hardboard matched the walnut color naturally. I was very fortunate in that!

Tom,
Beautiful finish, wish I could ever find a wad of cotton cloth when I'm looking for one! I'm curious as to why you changed from the 20 degree angle of the first stand, is 30degrees more conducive to a better lighting angle in the lap position? I like the angled edge cuts on bottom of main board also.

Dan said, "What else have you been up to ?"

Well, Dan, my oldest son got married this weekend, and it was a beautiful outdoor wedding. So now, I've got one son left, since my daughter got married about four years ago.

I haven't been doing as much woodwork as I would like, but I've got a lot of wood to turn into something as soon as I get the time.

Thanks for asking, Dan.

Ken,

Yes, the angle for the lap postion is better (for me, anyway) at 30 degrees. I actually made another one at 45 degrees a while back, but that was way too much, and it actually made the pages sag.

For the desk, I like it at 20 degrees. I do a lot of reading and book research, so these stands get a lot of use.

Glad to have you back, Tom!

Hi Tom:

OK - I like the 30° stand in walnut as well as your previous book rest at 20° - awesome! Is the Waterlox a tung oil you put "over" the shellac (not familiar with the Waterlox line yet)? I watch a good deal of David Marks and he uses tung oil without the shellac. Any reason for the extra step? I'm not a guru in the finishing department so I appreciate any input. The finish on this piece is a gorgeous as the book rest itself. I'm building one as time allows and I've got some walnut too! Inspire me to read and study more too.

Thanks!
