Project Information

This is one of the projects that I have built for my son's nursery. Two of them I already posted as projects: the rocking chair and the changing table. Since the theme of my son's room is very woodsy, the idea of having a giant tree coming out of the wall that doubled as a shelf fit perfectly. The shelf is made out of walnut-no veneer or anything. The larger part on the left side is hallow, but the rest of it is solid and it makes for a nice and heavy shelf. I attached the "branches" with a combination of dowels, screws, and glue. The finish is lacquer followed up by paste wax.

To attach it to the wall I used the blind shelf supports from Lee Valley. I had to bore the holes in the shelf using a bit and brace because I didn't have another drill bit that was long enough at 7/16". As seen in the last photo. Other than than, I think I used just about every tool in the shop on this project.

I originally got the idea of making this shelf from a post that someone shared on this site; it was so long ago that I don't remember the original link on Lumberjocks, but here's the artist's version that I was basing mine from. I'm not sure how he made his, but it's clear from the photos that it's veneer and not solid wood, like mine. Of course his is much larger and would be more difficult to make from solid wood.

Questions and comments are welcome. And in case you're wondering if you saw this yesterday, it's true. I posted it yesterday but had to delete it because the images weren't displaying properly. Alas.

Pretty cool. Lots of angles. I am sure that added to the difficulty level.

I just love this. The Walnut is perfect. Better not show this to my wife;-)

Hadn't seen your rocking chair yet. Very nice.

That's what happened to me, Red. I showed the shelf I linked above to my wife and she said it'd be nice in the nursery. The project took a long time, but mainly because I kept putting it off, but as it slowly grew in size I knew I had to complete it because it was taking up so much space in the garage.

Excellent project. Definitely not your ordinary shelf.

Brandon, I checked out those blind shelf supports. How do you feel about their strength? It seems like a lot leverage on those small screws.

Also, aren't you concerned about the moisture from the baby wipe warmer will cause warping? :^)

Scott, I was sceptical about the supports, but when I received them in the mail they seemed pretty strong. I used four of them. Plus, with the shape of the shelf makes them stronger (if that makes sense). I gave it a good tug after installing it and it was solid. That said, I still don't plan on making them hold a lot of weight other than the shelf itself.
