Project Information

I needed saw horses because i didn't have any type of working surface at home. I'm more familiar with using power tools, but i dont have the space in my garage to store them, so my hand tool skill level wasn't as superb as i thought it was.

Quick notes about this project

- biggest mistake was offsetting the mortise & tenon joint pin holes too much and busting out a hunk of wood. Fixed it with wood glue, but wish i didn't have this nightmare to deal with.

- Planing wood takes loads of energy and takes up a ton of time.

- If you are new to hand tools, be sure to use a saw that has a minimum of 5 teeth per inch.

- Have plenty of clamps on hand

- If you don't have a surface to work on top of, be nice to a neighbor that will lend you one of theirs. just be prepared to bake them some cookies afterwards if you do.

  • I built a CAD file for this project so let me know if anyone would like a certain file format, and I will be happy to accommodate requests.

They came out great mang! These are on my list to get done. I've had the lumber stickered in the shop for a couple months now. I doubled the materials list to cherry pick the best layout. I probably spent a half hour digging through the 4×6's at the home center to only have them check like crazy within a few days in the shop! I have not yet decided to use them or find a better grade of beams somewhere. What is your finished height? Any plans to apply a stain or sealer? I'm still trying to come up with work surface ideas when they are done.

Good job and welcome to Lj's.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Lumber jocks has a very friendly community. Ill try to post projects as soon as i finish them.

- Overall height is 915mm or 36"

-The finish I used was just an all natural wax called Feed n Wax. great stuff, smells like citrus.

- and if WhoMe is in the Chicagoland area I might just hook you up with some cookies you never know.

Great project. These will serve you well for many years. To convert to a bench, just throw a sheet of plywood on top. This makes a useful auxiliary bench for assembly or finishing.

They look great, and for an early hand project, they are well done. I have been using hand tools as an adjunct to power tools for years, simply because I've never been able to afford more power tools! But, I have picked up some skills and tricks that have definitely proved useful. And some things I still prefer to do by hand (I don't have a jointer, and use three handplanes to flatten my boards). So don't write off the hand tool skills yet, they work and save lots of money.

If you are looking for ideas for a top, here's an article on a Japanese benchtop that might be what you need
