Project Information

Map of the World

I estimate that this map took me 1 million hours to complete. (+/- 999,000 hours)

I used a lot of different exotic woods for this project to give it a contrast of colors.

Of the larger countries:
Canada - Paduak
Russia - Goncalo Alves
China - Bloodwood
Brazil - Yellowheart
USA - Stained Quartersawn White Oak
Australia - Black heart
India - Teak
Greenland - Birdseye Maple
Antarctica - Eucalyptus

Other woods include:
Purpleheart, Cocobola, Leapardwood, African Mahogany, Wenge, Birdseye Maple, Holly, Honduras Rosewood, Bocote, Bubinga, Canarywood, Ipe, Chechen, Cumaru, East Indian Rosewood, Jatoba, Figured Walnut, Osage Orange, Shedua, Zebrawood,

The Frame measures 8×4 feet and was probably the most difficult part - the outer frame was made from Beech and the longitude and latitude lines were alder as they bend well when steamed.

Lastly, I added RGB LED lighting behind the continents to glow into the wall and outline the continents at night. This greatly added to the difficulty but was definitely well worth it.

Gorgeous. Your map could make the cover of National Geographic. (Van der Grinten projection?)

Hey, where's Hawaii???

Just Kidding. That is absolutely incredible. I don't even want to think about how long that would take me.

That looks spectacular! Love the many different wood colors you used. The best and most unique map I have ever seen. Has a great effect when lighted. Superb work on it.
