Project Information

This is my shooting board. I based it mostly from what I seen on Derek Cohen's site.

I started with a 16×15 piece of 3/4" Melamine and screwed a 14×15 piece of 5/8" MDF to the top leaving a 2-1/4" ledge for the plane to slide once the trim was installed. On the underside I put a piece of walnut in a dado to hook on the bench then wrapped everything in walnut to make it pretty. The fence is another piece of walnut fastened down with some nuts and bolts so that it's adjustable for fine tuning. For a finish I wiped on a few coats of Danish oil to bring out the grain and add a bit of protection.

That looks good! Any plans to make a 45° and a 22.5° fence for it?

This is sweet. I really like how the fence is adjustable from one point. I need to make one of these premium shooting boards.

I haven't decided yet if I will make an additional 45* fence for this board or make another dedicated picture frame shooting board but right now I'm leaning towards a second board.

BigMig , the shooting board is mostly for fine tuning your joints on the wood. Do a search on YouTube and you will find a lot of videos on useing one. I still have to make one but it is going to be very basic without a lot of stuff to make it pretty. But this one is very pretty and looks to be doing a very good job.

I got the Veritas Shooting Plane for Christmas. It's an amazing upgrade.

Then I decided I should add a track to my shooting board and I had some UHMW laying around so I made a nice slippery track for the plane to run in.

Between the new plane and the track on the board, shooting is now effortless.
