My mother in law requested I make her a cutting board this past Christmas. This is what I came up with. Its hard maple with thick walnut strips. I had to flatten it by hand because it was wider than my jointer and I did not yet have my planer. I did not mind doing it by hand actually, I used my recently passed grandfather's old Stanley #3. I made a jig for the router table to create finger holes on the ends using a core box bit. After sanding to 300 grit, I soaked it for a couple of days in mineral oil, then wiped off the excess. She seemed happy with it.

Good looking cutting board! Like the simple design, the stripes, wood contrast and the finish really set it off.
