Project Information

This is my first project post on Lumber Jocks. It's a miniature butcher's block that I made for a friend as a house-warming gift, and is fashioned after what you might see in a butcher's shop. It's made of solid oak and measures 10"x10"x8.5". The butcher's knife that goes along with it measures only 6".

The pictures pretty much tell the whole tale. Made by laminating milled oak 2×2s together, turning some feet on the lathe, attaching some scrap wood to the side to hold the knife, and voila. Also, I tried to give the wood an aged look by roughing it up a little. Finished it off with a combination of carnauba wax and bees wax, so it smells a little sweet.

Very interseting and well done. Looks great… The finish is really nice. I would have counter sunk the screws but i really like this…. Welcome to Lumberjocks and well done.

That's quite a block of wood. Good job on it . Hopefully they cook and this will be utilized.

This is neat, very slick. Looks like a good cheese board for entertaining guests. You should mass produce these for sale, very nice and unusual.

Great first project. See if you can sell them to Hickory Farms. Looks like it would go well there.
I thought it was the real deal until i enlarged the pic.

How did you manage to flatten the top? I think its a really cool project. Adding to OJM's hickory farms idea - id definately cut up a beef log on that around the holidays.

Ken: I think I'll take your advice and countersink those screws. You're right, they'd look a whole lot better.

Oldtool and JustME: Thanks for the ideas! I'd love to sale some of these, but then I'd have to find time to make them all! Maybe one day.

Chris: I made a stop-jig for my miter saw when cutting the 2×2s to length. Because I used this jig, the boards were pretty close in length. I sanded the final project with a belt sander using 80 grit and then 120 grit. I then sanded (for a while) using a random orbit sander with 120 grit.

Thanks for all of the feedback guys!
