Project Information

Black Oak Box. This is the second commemorative box made from the legendary 200 year-old black oak tree from a relative's Wisconsin farm. The tree came down in a storm a few years ago, and the owner of the farm had it milled into lumber. The story goes that his great-uncle, a bit of a barn storming pilot, had to set down his plane in the canopy of this tree, and that it saved his life. True or not…..a great story!
The box is approximately 8.5×5 inches, finished in satin poly. the interior tray rests on side rails, and the box and tray are lined with black suede. The lid is hinged with hidden pins and features a pair of Black Oak leaves as decoration and lift. The leaves are three-part, with a center vein of walnut and the outer oak pieces placed with the grain running at 45 degrees to the center vein. The mitered corners are reenforced with walnut splines, and the bottom is dadoed into the sides.
By the way, it feels good to have something to post again after spending most of the winter on crutches following a broken ankle in late December.

Very nice box and I really like the leaves - what a great touch! Question: Is the lid hinged? If so, how?

Jim, great wood, great design, great carving idea, great finish, great story. I liked this post. It had a human element, and a story that matched the quality of the work. Glad to hear you are back in the shop. I know how you feel since I was out for a while with a hip replacement this winter. Nice that they make new parts for old guys. Keep boxing and keep posting.

I admire very much all your boxes with a leaf or 2 as a lift-tab.
Makes people think about the trees, as they were
before they gave their lives for our enjoyment
