Project Information

This is a box that I just finished. I wanted to try to incorporate some of the themes from the Art Deco movement without going all the way there. I saw some boxes like this on Etsy, and it seemed like a good match.

The main box is built using veneer over a Baltic birch ply core. I finally got my shop cleaned up enough and fired up the vacuum press. I plan to revisit the press more often. The feet and handle holders are made with black walnut. I cut 3/8 inch sticks and used a 3/8 inch round-over bit in the router table to make the rounded ends. The handle and small strips in the walnut are tiger maple. The top of the handle has a bull nose profile formed with a 3/16 round-over. There are two walnut and maple strips under the top that locate it on the box.

The size is about 11" x 5" wide by about 5" deep not including the handle. The finish is Danish oil and wax.

I love it! The art deco influence is quite evident, but with your own very original spin.

Great work as usual, Steve.

Steve - wow, now that is art deco!!

You said "I wanted to try to incorporate some of the themes from the Art Deco movement without going all the way there".

You may need to revisit the definition of "all the way"

I like it! It kind of reminds me of the ark of the covenant--perhaps an abstract rendering of it.

Nice one Steve.
I've always been an art deco fan, one of these days I'll get around to making something like this.
You've struck a very nice balance between elegant detail features and simple design. That's not easy.
But the box is … easy on the eyes.

Bravo !

PS: Now you need a chevalet.
