Project Information

I just finished my miter saw/planer station. It's a 14 foot long, free-standing cabinet built on a ladder frame with hocky-puck feet. The cabinet is built out of 3/4" birch plywood. The top and shelves are melamine. The shelves are held by Charles Niels' adjustable supports. Thanks for the videos Charles! I installed Kreg Traks on the fence. A small chunk of the table comes out to slide in my planer. The planer stores in the cabinet. This shouldn't be too much of an inconvenience since I don't use the planer very often. I don't turn on the dust collector every time I use the saw, so there is a small trough at the bottom of the dust collector box that holds sawdust. I just turn the dust collector on periodically and brush the dust to the pipe. It seems to work OK.

This looks great, add sawdust! (laughing) I have a set up like this and used that empty space behind the fence for storage by making boxes with no bottoms and adding lift up tops to keep the dust mostly out. Holds longer items like extra drawer slides, the odd long steel bar extra tape measure, square and such. Small items you can have at your fingertips saving all that precious drawer space. Just an idea…

That a nice set up you made. Cool idea for the planer as well. The dust collection idea for the miter saw will help. its the one tool in my shop that makes the biggest mess. Very clean…

Thanks guys,

Michael, I like your idea of boxes behind the fence. I'll work on that. I've found that that area is already a clutter collector. I actually had to clean it up to take pictures. As far as size, it was just the logical dimension for where it was going. Anything smaller would have been wasting space.

Looks great. I'm about 95% done with a new SCMS station myself so it's good to get a little inspiration.

great job .spent some time and money on that job .I would sujest though that you add a method so saw can come forward . At times you will be cutting warped boards ,or it seems I often do anyhow .Having the saw fence flush can be very scary if you cannot get the board to flush to the miter saw fence . I have both of mine set 1/2" forward .i just use the table fence to hold my stop . thanks for sharing

That's a good idea Gunny. I'll have to do something similar. Unfortunately, I've already been directed to move onto other projects. SWMBO only has so much patience. Thanks.

Whitebeast. I think the cabinet is about 24" deep. My shop is long, but narrow. So depth was a big concern. I used the depth of the saw to set the depth of the cabinet. In fact, the depth was such a concern, I used thinner plywood on the back of the dust collector box so it wouldn't add additional depth. There is about 1/8" space between the back of the saw and the box. Because of this, dust from the saw was bouncing off the box directly into my face. So I put the elbow from the collector bag on and pointed it to the DC port. Works well now. I made the upper top 12" deep because that is the table width of the planer. I would have liked to make the whole thing deeper because someday I'd like to upgrade to a sliding miter saw, and the current depth probably won't work. Maybe that new Bosch saw will work. I'll cross that bridge when I get there.
