Project Information

I recently built a llaminating press so that I could laminate some wood for a different effect to use when sculpting my boxes. This box is the first experiment using the press.

The sides are laminated with three pieces…the first is 1/4" padauk, the middle is 1/4" maple and the third is another piece of 1/4" padauk. The top was to also made of the padauk and maple but I did not have as much padauk as I thought so I ended up using some cumaru that has been gathering dust on the shelf….after all, it is just my first laminated sculpting and an experiment.
Several things I learned from this first laminated box:
...The Titebond III I used seems to bleed through the padauk where the laminated pieces make the transition…especially noticable when using the light maple… Need to experiment with a different glue and/or wood to see if it does a better and less noticable transition.

...Instead of just 3 layers of 1/4" on my next box I will use thinner pieces with more lamination for a different effect.

Other than these things I was satisfied with the experiment.

Taking it to another level Greg.
The day we stop challenging ourselves will be a bad day.
This looks like a very good day for you.

Sweet!!

Looks nice, very interesting detail. By your post I thought you performed a lab experiment in such a nice creation. Was worried ya know? Leave those types of experiments in the frig for the wife. (Laughing)

Wow. I went back through your projects over the past years and all I can say is wow. From your first carved box to now you've made amazing strides. I've just started out at woodworking and have yet to attempt carving. You sir, are an inspiration.

Nice Work Greg!!
I think you could be onto something here!!
I know this was an experiment, but when you get more padauk, replace the top on this, I like it but think it will look so much better with the Padauk and maple top!
Can't wait to see more of your crazy experiments next!
Keep up the great work, thanks for sharing!

Great job Greg. I tried this a while back, but since I haven't gotten around to building a press, there is no easy way to do it. I would say you have nailed it.

this has so many possibilities….i had the thought you could do a lamination of some really dark wood and some light and maybe some red type of wood and carve it to look like a big spider…the top being the main body and then the legs would come out and over the sides…maybe you can get my vision..anyway, very cool Greg..so many ways to go with this..enjoy…and i look forward to seeing what you do with this..keep on boxin bro…

Beautiful piece Greg. If you don't mind me asking, what is your primary tool for carving these? I was thinking it may be a holey galahad on a grinder or something similar.

Again, really cool effect. Tim

Greg: I admire you always challenging youself, gives you a good feeling when it is accomplished. I agree, the top would look better with paduck/maple. Maybe hide glue would work better for the laminating.

Greg, great looking experiment. I have not noticed bleed through with type II on walnut and maple, but my
pieces were 1" not 1/4", or it could just be the padauk having a tendency to bleed, if that is the case, a very
thin coat of glue might seal it, and would give a better joint when another thin coat was added to glue the
layers, or it might not. Thank you for sharing.
