Project Information

This is my first post here! I'm a computer engineer in the day and a want-to-be New Yankee workshop guy on the weekends. :) so forgive me if my work is not up to par with everyone else here. I'm getting there!

A good buddy of mine asked if i could build a portable rifle rack for his Airsoft/Paintball guns. When they go play in the field during the breaks his buddies usually just lay their guns around the ground and on the sides of their car. I came up with idea this after looking at similar ones on this site and others. http://lumberjocks.com/projects/2847.

His requirement was that it was small enough to fit in his mini cooper, light weight, not too expensive to make, hold about a dozen guns ranging from snipers rifles to stubby close quarter combat style guns.

The first one i made came out nice, it's the one that is very dark walnut color, but looks like black spray paint :) . It was my first attempt with an HVLP gun and a trans tint dye/toner and I did it at night with bad lighting, started off good, but after failing to blend it properly, it came out way too dark.

It got a lot of looks at the field and people asked where we bought it, and one guy, wanted to buy it from me on site. I offered to make one for him to trade for another airsoft gun worth $400 and he agreed!!!! He owns a store so I'm sure he gets them for cheaper, but hey, this only cost me $35 for materials and about a day of good fun building it. This is the second one that I built for him and he has it in his shop when they work on customers guns. The cool thing is that both of these are compact 30×28 x 4 1/2 and folds into itself with no chains or obstructions. I also added the cool factor of putting in some torsion springs so when you open it the bottom backstop and second gun rack it automatically flips up locking it in place.

If i build another one it will be with maple or oak since i didn't want to mess that up the first time, this is out of regular white wood, probably pine i picked up at home depot.

Thought i post it since I got my inspiration from here. Hope this helps someone else! Thanks

Nice build, especially the added features like the spring activated locking feature. This build looks real good, it's on par with the best of them.

Very cool…..............I am thinking that you should make and paint one camoflage. I would have to believe that would fit the theme better.

Nice rack, and nice guns. Anyone else think of Wayne's World?

Opens present.
Wayne: What is it?
Stacy: It's a gun rack.
Wayne: A gun rack… a gun rack. Shyeah, Right! I don't even own A gun, let alone many guns that would necessitate an entire rack. What am I gonna do… with a gun rack?

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. I was thinking of doing camo too but I'm not good with paint, but the guy I made it for also owns a autobody paint shop so I think he can do it justice…. painting cars and wood should be pretty similar.

Wow! This is very nice. I'm an avid paintballer, but a novice woodworker. Any measurements or anything you could provide on this? It looks simple enough and I have some basic tools… would like to give it a shot.

I don't really have a drawing or dimensions on it, I just made it based the heights and widths of the type and size of guns it was going to be used for. As you can see in the photo, there is a lower barrel holder as well for the stubby riffles that are not log enough to reach the top. the spacing b/t them about 2.5" to allow for the barrels, scopes, etc not to touch.

Materials:

- 1×4pine at home depot/lowes

- 2×24" piano hinge. (one for the base, and one for the top)

- 2×2x2 standard hinge.

- 2x torsion springs . One for the bottom backstop to flip open to stop the gun butts from sliding off and one on top when I lift up the slotted top piece that holds the barrel, the little torsion spring pushes a block of wood to hold up that piece.

-Wood screws, glue and carriage bolts to hold it together

Here is the first one I made, I have a video on it. Not as nice as this one, but it shows it's function.
