Project Information

Made 8 flower boxes this week for a friend who owns a campsite. They are 120cm long and made out of eucalyptis, wich we use for almost everything overhere in Portugal. In the background is my "workshop to be", luckely the roof is ready, so I can work on projects without standing in the rain. The handles are there to be able to lift them up when they are filled (and heavy). These boxes will be placed along a driveway, so need to be mobile for whenever a truck or big mobilehome needs to drive in.

Very nice. Is eucalyptis an inexpensive wood in Portugal?

Eucalyptis is used here in Portugal as firewood, scaffoldingwood, roofbeams, fenceposts etc. There's a lot of discussion because it's not a native tree, but proberly 50% of all new planted trees are eucalyptis. Lot of farmers just plant a big field of them so they have an income every 10 years… getting thicker pieces is not easy because nobody lets them grow more than 10 or 12 years. Strange thing is that these trees survive in a bushfire while others burn down. So yes, it's proberly the cheapest wood around….

Good work and nice looking flower boxes. There are a lot of Eucalyptus trees in California where I used to live. I always wondered how they would be for woodworking.

One more question. Is the eucalyptus as impervious to rot and bug like cedar?

Thanks for all the comments.

To reply to some questions, we always use "Nilzone"to protect the Eucalyptus against the bugs. The bugs only like it when it's fresh… We have a fence placed 5 years ago, only gave it one coat, and although after all this time the planks are 1 cm wider in winter than in the summer, there's no rot or any other problems. After all this time it would be impossible to put in a screw or nail without pre-boring first, it's became as hard as a rock.

Update: Just got a picture send from my campsite friend Rémy at Pelinos, Tomar. I'll guess the plants have to grow a bit!
