Project Information
I have been interested in latticework for some time. In particular I wanted to learn to make Japanese shoji kumiko.
Eventually, this led to going as far as buying a Bridge City Toolworks JMP and I cut various lattice shapes and one day there it was, a square lattice. What design to fill it with?
And I realized I didn't want to just copy the traditional designs, as beautiful as they are. So I began playing with ideas that try to embrace the ideas behind kumiko such as pieces held in place with friction. And the idea of a key that holds other pieces in place. But nothing felt quite right.
Then I decided to introduce curves and that led to using my Tormach mill to make parts.
Once I began using Onsrud downcut bits, this went rather well. The process began drawing the design in CAD software (Vectric VCarvePro) then machining the parts, then cutting them free on a band saw.
After a few weeks of trying different ideas, I settled on this one for this first lattice project.
Once I finished that I decided to add a frame and also made most of the cuts on the Tormach. The cherry was of course milled with standard tools such as my Minimax jointer/planer, etc.
And here is the finished product. Now hanging on a wall.
