Project Information
I needed a table for our sunroom and wanted to use up left over materials from various projects, including building a house. I had a variety of hardwood flooring, which I cut into wedges and used in the outer section.
The table is 64 in across and the center section is 36 in, so it will comfortably accommodate 8 people. The center is mounted on a bearing to make a turntable.
While it is essentially circular, I decided that the outer band, made of 2 in thick solid cherry would look better retaining the octagonal shape. The trestle base is 1 1/2 in spruce with cherry used for the features. The top is treated with epoxy for durability and once it is fully set, I will reduce the gloss to a satin.
This was a plan-as-I-went project, but I did draw up the base to scale to get the shapes i wanted. The center mosaic is modeled after a tile mosaic that I have in two locations in the house.
if anyone knows the history or meaning of that design, I'd be interested in finding out (I think).
the hardwood in the radial pattern is cherry, maple, birch, oak and some Brazilian cherry. The mosaic is pine, cedar and some maple. A piece of 3/4 ply is under both sections.
On this project I set a new record for myself in producing scraps and sawdust. It's winter so most of it went into the fireplace. The only metal in the table is the brackets and bolts that secure the top to the base. Oh yes… and the turntable bearing.
