Project Information

Well it's that time of year again, where I donate a "work of heart" to the Memphis Child Advocacy Center for a live silent auction that will take place Feb 9, this Saturday night.

I decided i wanted to make a Ginkgo leaf this year as a donation and think this really came out nice. This is the first time I have used yellow heart wood and really enjoyed it. The grain was nice and long and straight so it worked perfect for the leaf stem. The size is 14 inches wide and 48 inches long. This wood sands so nice and waxes out really well. I wanted it to stay nice and almost zen-like, so then I created a sort of a "hand/vase" out of cherry as a contrast to the yellow heart and this is what attachs the leaf to the wall. So the leaf stands out from the wall by about half an inch. For exhibit, I mounted it on a black velvet backer, so in the gallery, this stands out more than most work hung there.

As with most of my pieces, I start with an angle grinder and sand by hand after that.

I'd love to hear your opinions on this.

Ellen…your work is always stunningly beautiful…this piece is no exception. After viewing the first photo of the work in progress, I was going to ask you about the hole drilled into the piece but then as I continued, the answer became obvious. Once again, terrific work.
