trying to answer the immediate questions first - 3 phase in the garage

I've been thinking about doing a craigslist shop series for a while. With all the questions on craigslist, three phase, and pricing, I figured I should start by answering the immediate questions and try and help some make some buying decisions.
Short answer first; yes you can run three phase in the garage. There for some you can now go back to looking at the projects pages.
Slightly longer answer: For this we are going to assume you only need to run one or two three phase units. Most common would be table saw, lathe, and if your really into a crowded garage maybe an 18" powermatic PM180 planer. This maybe just my fantasy but if you've read this far you may need to look up from the screen and give your other half a smile just to make sure.

In order to run three phase machinery you must first have a 220v plug within proximity of where you want to put the machine.

Now that there is power to use, I used a Temco FM-50. It is possible to wire the VFD before the switch and use the normal machine on/off. It is also possible to just use the VFD as the on/off switch which is what I did.

Dont let a three phase deal kill your dreams. A 2hp unisaw for under $300 would have you up and running in a couple days for less than $500 and that would include a new saw blade.

getlostinwood - thanks for taking the time to help beginners out. Suggestion - explain what a VFD is.

Without getting wonky, mainly because I'm not qualified to be wonky on this subject, a VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) is a mechanism that converts a single phase input say 220v into a three phase output like 220v 3ph. It also will allow the user to control the speed of the motor. This feature makes it a very nice feature when looking at older lathes and planers.

For the wonks here is the wiki link

What does a potential deal look like?

In this entry I thought I would begin to post a couple of adds that I would consider potential shop builders. I'll try and cover a few different pieces of equipment. I'm just going to do a few searches for today and pull out what I would consider going to look at. I am not in any way saying these are the best deal out there or that the equipment is great, only that for someone starting out with a small budget could begin to assemble a shop in pretty short order and not have to starve the kids to do it.
Wood Automotive tire Gas Motor vehicle Machine tool

old jointer with 3 phase motor-I do not know the condition of the motor as I have no way to test it-it is extreemly heavy $300.00
Comment: swap motor of vfd and you have a tool that you great grand kids can use

Automotive tire Motor vehicle Automotive exterior Gas Automotive wheel system

older Delta jointer, runs but do not know much about it $75
Comment: needs cleaning and paint, Id build a new base but again another 50 years in this tool

Wood Gas Machine Art Metal

CRAFTSMAN RADIAL ARM SAW. 60S' SEND PHONE NUMBER WILL MEET YOU TO SHOW.

6" PLANER
Comment: These were listed as $60 it didnt specify for the pair or not but I'd bet they could be had for not more than $90 for the pair.

I hope this is helping someone.

OK…....The first one, if I can make out the maker is an American, great Company!! Appears to be a 6" but hard to tell without something for scale. Kinda a rare bird, not too many of the smaller American jointers left. Definitely a coolness factor there. As for the 3phase, a VFD would handle the conversion from single to 3 phase and will cost considerably less than a single phase motor of equivalent HP. Stand is not original

The Delta 6" jointers are a dime a dozen. The one pictures seems to be in good shape and for $75 priced appropriately. It will clean up very nicely and appears to be ALL original, very cool in my opinion.

The 3rd is a direct drive Walker Turner, or so it appears, the stand is Walker Turner and the fuzzy badge on the front looks like a WT tag. Again a nice little jointer that out last all of us after cleaned up. If you go that route take a very close look at the motor and mounting for any signs of cracked motor mounting or abuse. The DMD jointer is not able to be converted over to belt drive as the cutter head may be a part of the motor shaft. I dont recall if they used a lovejoy coupler or not.

The Crapsman RAS is just that. Wait and find a good deal on a DeWalt 8 or 10" MBB or MBF. Much better quality and not near as ugly.

If it were me, I would buy all 3 jointer, LOL. I love the old arn. For someone just starting out looking for a good quality, easily maintained, parts readily available including a FACTORY mobile caster set, I would lean more towards the Delta.
