Project Information

These three boxes are made from curly spalted maple cut from a tree that fell a long time ago in a friends neighbors back yard. in a couple of years it probably would have been dirt. The wood is very spongyand dificlt to work, but beautiful. Sadly I only have a little left. The top is curly oak

Boxes are 6×6x4ish, and I used kerf hinges on the lid.

you can stabilize the punky wood by thinning down polyurethane and pouring it in a large heavy plastic bag then tape the top closed around a shop vac nozzle.
Keep it going on and off until no more bubbles are visible coming from the wood.
Remove the piece, let it cure and it will be as hard as a hookers heart the day after payday.

Very nice wood, but I also like the neat work on the corners. The splines didn't need to contrast to do their job.
On to the next beautiful piece of wood! You know it will be found.

You have come up with amazing wood once again! That curly oak is becoming your trademark (I love it but haven't seen any around me). The subtle splines were just right for this one. Dallas- Good tip and a great analogy!

beautiful wood and beautiful boxes. I had some spalted maple in my shop for a few years before I could figure out how to use it best and like you turned it into some boxes and a vase.

Beautiful box….love the spalted maple. I used this on my first box. BTW, you can find nice spalted maple on the Internet at fairly reasonable prices.
