Project Information

I did this Island for a customer that brought me a picture from a website. The picture they brought me had old salvaged wood with different colors of paint, which were most likely a lead based paint. Being that they were going to actually prepare food directly on the top, I suggested a few changes to it. It's larger than the original design, and instead of using salvaged wood that may have lead paint on it, we went with different varieties of wood on the panels, so that it wood have a similiar effect, but not take the risk of adding toxic lead to their diet.

The panels are made up of purple heart, cherry, walnut, poplar and maple. The top is maple with a watco butcher block finish applied heavily to create a glossie finish, to show off the burl i the wood. The legs, cross members and faceframing are all maple also as well as the shelf. For the maple in the panels I chose a few pieces that had more color to them, to contrast the structural parts of the cabinet.

The inside has pull out shelves (drawers) and a slot for baking sheets.

I did not see their kitchen before I built the island for them, kinda wish I'd have gotten that job though, especially after they told me what they paid for it, and it's really not that big either :X
