Project Information

Sawed up my little girl's baby bed and incorporated the pieces into the headboard and footboard of a new "big girl" bed. The corner posts, four rails (sides and ends), and slats and their supports are all new wood. The "ladder" portions of the head- and footboard are composed of recycled baby-bed wood. Although I took inspiration and procedural instruction from Jeff Miller's Beds, the design is my own and is based around the parts I had left over. My additions are all solid poplar, and the recycled pieces appear to be that as well. Plain ole' 6" hex bolts and nuts from Lowe's work just as well as the extraordinarily expensive bed bolts from Rockler, and you don't need a special wrench, either. Used the $99 HVLP turbine spray gun from Rockler (and Harbor Freight) to spray a high-gloss acrylic enamel latex. Solid performer-highly recommended-once you figure out how to use it. Overall, I'm amazed out how rock-solid the bed turned out.

That's one great looking bed. I particularly like how you handled the strips with the dowel inserts.

Thanks. I have to give credit for the doweled slat supports to Jeff Miller. That is a fantastic book, by the way, and if you're planning on building a bed, I highly recommend it.

Great bed- I also love the dowels. My most recent bed (king size) has three rails and 12 slats-that's 36 screws I will have to remove and replace when we move in a few months. The dowels are not only more convenient, but a couple steps classier too.
