Project Information

natural edge log has been hollowed out and the sides were partially turned and sanded the wall thickness varies do to natural variation in logs but 0.2 to 0.5" height 6" hollow depth 5.5" diameter 6"... Hope this keeps me out of hot water on giving all dimension….and there has been hot glue used to help keep some of the bark attached not sure if that is cheating….but it worked
The pith of the tree remains without checking or cracking…

Nooooo I don't think it's cheating using hot Glue, if it does the job.

I like it as well. Congrats.

Cheers Tony.

If I'm the Tony your asking it's a Go for me! I like it! It's unique and I like how you can see the wood then the bark and it reminds me of an old treasure Map. Every angle has a different view. It don't matter what glue you use most projects have some kind of glue holding everything together. Even if it's dovetails or box joints. I've used hot glue many times. It's great stuff when you need that type of bond!
Now let's have toast ! Nice Job Jeffrey!

I've thought of turning something with the grain oriented this way. How did you hold it on the lathe ? I guess one way would be to bolt a face plate to the base and then cut off the part with the bolt holes afterwards . . .

Waste wood block with layer of brown paper bag then glued to the bottom, screw faceplate into waste wood, turn…use a wide sharp chisel and give the glue joint a wrack with a mallet and they should split at paper joint…
