Project Information

I have been wanting to put some of my shop equipment on mobile bases for a while now and finally got around to it. Saw a forum that suggested using the HF moving dollies to acomplish this and after I got the coupons offering them for 8 bucks I knew that this would be the way to go. Heck you cant buy the casters for each base for 8 dollars. They say they are rated for 1000 pounds (which I seriously doubt) but nothing I was going to be mounting them on is anywhere close to that. Total cost for project (dollies and wood for bases) was around 12 dollars plus tax per base. My chiropractor may not be happy with them but I sure am…. good way to spend a couple of hours in the shop while it is raining.

I have given up on using the HF dolly casters. I have found that at least one of the four doesn't have enough balls in the bearings to pivot freely when loaded. The result is one wheel is pointing in the wrong direction and needs a kick to get it repositioned. What should be something that rolls freely in any direction tends to behave as if it had a mind of its own. I have been slowly converting over to quality casters for the equipment that gets moved more often or tends to be top heavy (drill press and bandsaw).

Hey thanks for comments macatlin….Our "local" HF is in Chattanooga so had to make a 45 minute trip over there. They only had 3 of the dollies that were covered by the coupon so at the price I took them all. When I got them home and went to projecting I found one of them to be exactly as you described. But once again, at the price I cant complain too badly…lol

My Tractor Supply has the same rig on sale once in a while. I've bought them for the same reason. I always wind up cutting them up for something. For the $10 +/- they are well worth the 4 casters.

Oooohhhh…. I love to save money, but those look really unstable. Be careful! A falling machine is dangerous. HF also sells a mobile base that goes for $40 which is safe and has a brake. Let's be safe out there.

I've done the same thing Buster and they've worked out well.
I'm lucky in that the driveway apron expansion joint attached to the garage floor pad has just enough gap to act as a catch for the casters, while still being able to roll the machine back in to the garage when I'm done with it.

Thanks Jamie…thinking that is gonna have to happen before I run any long stuff accross it. It handled the four and five foot pieces I edged today but am not so sure about anything longer.

Thanks for your comments Eric. My driveway is asphalt instead of concrete so I dont have any convient expansion joints…dang it. Wonder if my wife would mind my cutting out a couple of notches…lol
