Project Information

This is my first post and I'm hoping I get the photos so they look right - I'm not sure what the best sizes are for posting… Hope this works!

Here's the story of my first wood bracelet:
Last September my good friend Karen was down visiting from Alaska to take part in the Seattle Brain Cancer Walk. Karen has been a wonderful supporter of my wife and I and a big part of the Walk, which my wife and I also help with. While she was here she mentioned how she'd love to have a wooden bracelet similar to a silver one she often wore. I did a quick sketch and trace of her bracelet (important for getting the wrist size correct!) and then added it to my "to explore making sometime" list. Happily, that "sometime" is "now" and the Karen Bracelet is going to have a wonderful, snow-filled home up in our 50th State!

Being Lumberjocks, I know you're all wondering about the wood and process! Unfortunately, I'm not sure of the wood - it was from my scrap pile (which is most all of my wood). It looks somewhat like sapele. Anyway, I cut it on my scroll saw and then hand sanded. The hinge is made with a brass alloy called Merlin's Gold - I soldered some tabs onto tubing, used my flexshaft to carefully bur slots into the bracelet and glued it in. Then I riveted some wire to make the hinge. The bracelet is held closed with small magnets that you can just see in the open bracelet photos. The finish is a butcher block re-finisher (I'm spacing on the name, but I'll edit with it once I go back out to the studio).
