Project Information

I was helping my neighbor cut down a maple tree that had been dead for a couple of years and saw the really beautiful spalt running through it. So I saved a few peices, milled it down to workable stock and put this box together. Instead of making a handle, I chamfered the entire edge of the bottom section where lid closes to give it a clean look. the finish is just boiled linseed oil. This one is for me. I like projects that have character and meaning and also serve a purpose. Also has been my "in-between projects" project. I really love spalted maple…It has a unique character.

Beautiful wood and nice box. It's fun to start with a tree and end up with a finished project isn't it? That finish is a nice response to the BLO naysayers!

Its my first time finishing with BLO. It was extremely easy and gave it a really rich color and made the spalt really show. Put me down as a "Yea" on Boiled Linseed Oil.

When you say BLO, do you refer to some canned product, or do you actually boil raw linseed oil?
In that case, what's the process to boil it? I mean, how much time, temp, if you use it while it's hot, etc.
I ask because I've only used it raw so far.

Very nice box, thanks for sharing.

What a beauty! Great choice of wood figure and color for a project like this. I've got some walnut from my neighbors' tree that I had band-sawed by a local sawyer. It's now aging in the loft of my shop, awating just such projects as yours. I hope mine turn out somewhere near as well.

Have fun!

Following up on my earlier post, I've been wondering how the lid works. Is it hinged? You wrote: "Instead of making a handle, I chamfered the entire edge of the bottom section where lid closes to give it a clean look." The chamfering was along the top edge of the sides?

Bruce, the lid is hinged on the back….and yes I chamferred the edge of the bottom section creating a purchase point to lift the lid on front and two sides. (sorry for the delayed response)
