Project Information

I've been looking to make a dust separator for some time now. I was originally going to use the kit from Rockler for this but it only comes in 4" and I wanted to keep the shop vac diameter. I just made the appropriate fittings out of some PVC from the local home store. Along with the clear extendable shop vac hose from Rockler, this turned out to be a pretty good solution. Never have to change out my filter any more.

That's a neat looking machine! What is the drum made of?

Well done.
Makes the shop sold units look a bit over engineered and expensive!
I used two small plastic buckets and some pipe on mine which was made out of necessity due to the extractor blocking up when I used my thicknesser.

All made from "stuff" I had around the house.

If it takes the dust out of the air then it's good to go! Nice job!

Thanks for all of the kind comments. Kizerpea is right. It's a fiber drum. I work at an industrial bakery and this one used to be full of cake starch. Thankfully the starch was in a plastic bag also so no residue.

Nice project. It looks like you do not have a hold down on the barrel lid…correct? Do you find one was not needed? I like the way you have it hooked to your sander…smart.

You can't really see it in the pictures, but there is a ring that clamps the top to the drum. It is definitely needed. The top would come off without it. All fiber drums I've seen come with it.

What happens if the sucking end get stucked? Does the vacuum cleaner suck the drum flat? Do You have a valve or something to prevent it?

I like this idea, and I might try this with a blue plastic type drum that is common in my area. Thanks for the idea.

This design is what I have with a 55gl plastic drum except I used the Rockler 4" kit and I don't know if it isn't just as good as the kleine sys. I had about 10" of dust in my HF DC bag and since I hooked up my separator to it the level of dust hasn't risen at all.
