Project Information

Got all of this oak flooring out of the trash so it's time to put some to use.

Mitered joints with walnut splines, or as I like to call them, "table saw boxes". 2 coats of danish oil to finish it off.

Boxguy if you read this, I was able to get continuous grain on 3 sides following your advice, but didnt undercut my 45's. Im going to try that next time around to compare. I also didn't throw the roundover on the corners this time because the stock itself is something like 3/16ths and I was worried Id blow out the corner. Im planning on doing another splined miter out of some wood I laminated into stripes, Im hoping to get a neat negative effect with the splines, and Ill be rounding those over. Obviously this will be done with thicker wood. That should help get a nice long spline in there too.

Any and all feedback is welcome and appreciated.

BW, a cenotaph of boxes? You certainly believe in quanity. Looks like you have matched the grain nicely on the corners, and have mastered gluing on the tops and bottoms. Have you made a press for that yet? It is a pain, but you can glue a quarter round into each of the inside corners, pin nail the quarter round to hold until glue dries, then cut deeper splines into the box.

Looking forward to the thicker versions. Including dimensions helps your readers know what size box we are seeing. Keep boxing and keep posting.

Yes! I will include dimensions, and once again your idea…pure genius (quarter round) I make boxes in sets, because if I can make a box in an hour I can usually make 5 or 6 in 2 hours. Set up takes me more time then the cutting. I see it as one to keep a few to sell, and a few to give away.

Boxguy I dotn have a press as of yet, and to be honest im nto quite sure what you mean. I glued the bottoms on, and I usually pin them with micro dowels, but these tops are just staright rabbits, or what I call a gravity top. Id like to try a box with contained tops and bottoms, cut in half and hinged….

BW, if you clamp the quarter round it tends to split the corner joint open…that is why I suggested pin nails.

Here are some hints about cutting through the lid.

The press I use is a two board sandwich with 8 all threads or bolts long enough to let the box fit between the boards. You insert the box, tighten the bolts with an impact driver, and you don't need all the clamps. A blog on this is on my long list of things to do.
