Project Information

As I had never ever scrollsawed in my life I decided to try this.
With no scrollsaw on hand and, not wanting to spend big money on a scrollsaw to try it I decided to try to make one.
Some google images later I came up with some ideas that started spinning in my head.
I did not have any plan but made things as the building progressed.
The only thing I had planed whas that it did not have to ha a very deep throat, and it was to be made from plywood scraps and misc hardware that i had laying around.

Throat depth turned out to be 410mm
Total height of the saw is 650 mm.

I have not yet built a stand for it as I dont know where to put it.
It might be on a pullout shelf, I dont know

I am sure some of you think that dont waste your time building one, when you can purchase a much better one for a small amount of money.
Well, I like building machines just to see if I can do it, and i am sure the low end scrollsaws out there outperform my homemade one, but just for the fun of it.

If I was to start scrollsawing for real, I would buy one of the shelf that would give me a better result.

I embedded a short video from when I tested it.

Dont laugh of my scrollsaw "moves".... I am a firsttimer on this, or a scrollsaw virgin if you like.

Very nice. Great use of the toggle. On the contrary, home built tools are the best. You constructed it very well.
Great job. !!

I LOVE it!!!

Very ingenious! I smile at the idea of using a old saber saw for power and I especially like the "quick release" blade changer. That is an interesting idea for the front ball bearing guides at the lower arm. Somehow I don't think you'll be getting a "store bought" scroll saw any time soon. That one works just fine.

Very Nice design and well executed build I must say. This one would definetely stand up to my entry level craftsman scroll saw and most likely out perform it from what I can see in the video. I paid roughly $105. for mine and this one had to be all but half of that

That certainly looks like a well engineered saw. You should be proud of your effort and outcome. I'd bet it will out perform most, if not all entry level machines and then some.

Shop built is often better than factory made, as you can design your spec's & requirements into it. Usually, there are trade offs between different models of factory made.

I have a feeling one of these are going onto my build list.

Well done!!!

Outstanding job with design and build. I'm sure it would give the low-end Skil and Ryobi a run for the money.

I have played with scrollsaws since 1953! If I would have had one as good as yours; I probably would even know a little about them now!

Tools are like patterns; sometimes, the only viable solution is to make your own!

Very NEAT!!---GREAT JOB---DO NOT RUSH to buy one! The new one would get the "shelf time" and the home-made would be in use!

I GUARANTEE, if you buy an entry level (cheap) scrollsaw, after using your home-made you will be disappointed!
