Project Information

I made this out of maple as a Christmas gift for my four year old nephew. It's from the book Wooden Puzzles: Thirty-one Favorite Puzzles and Patterns . The idea is to rearrange the letters to build as many words as you can. I plan to make additional letters to send to him later, to expand the number of words he can make.

The dowels are cherry and the finish is danish oil. I may need to put another coat on as some of the curves on the tops of the c, e and a are looking slightly dry in some light.

The fit of the dowels in the base's holes is quite tight but I think he can manage it and it may loosen up over time. If he finds it hard to put them in, then he can build the words on a tabletop and use the base for storage.

That's a great gift, I'm sure he'd like the letters to make his name as well!

Good for provoking thought. We need more of that for kids now.

Good job

Fortunately he's got a short name Julie; I'll be able to do that with just two more letters!
