Project Information

I was cleaning up the barn and sorting logs that I want to keep and those that have cracked too much to be of any good. There was this slab from a Box Elder tree that I have been tripping over for months and I was going to burn it because it was cracked and delaminating in pieces. I cut it in half and thought it might have one good bowl in it. The piece I started with was about 4" thick but I could soon see that half of that would be flying off the lathe at me so I chiseled the loose part off and this is what was left. Before turning the inside, I had to load the cracked area with West System epoxy and it stayed intact to finish it.
It finished at 8 3/4" dia and 1 7/8" high. It is coated with clear lacquer and waxed.

The last shot shows the rest of the log that this bowl came from. Nothing solid on it except the sap wood.

That is the best-looking piece of box elder I've seen. Nice save with the epoxy stabilizing.

You never know what is hiding inside any piece of wood until it give it a try. You picked a winner this time but you always do. Hope you and family has a great Thanksgiving holiday.

Great work Jim! I need to cut down some trees on the property and get some bowl blanks from them. One tree will last me months! Lol! Which kind to choose, maple, oak, walnut, butternut - the list goes on forever!

Us woodies are very luck that we get to play with such a "flexible" material that you can (if you have the skill) mould & shape to your liking.
Well done on the rescue Jim, would have been a shame to have thown it in the fire box.

"I went down down down into the bowl of fire…" Sorry, couldn't resist the Johnny Cash reference. That is one cool looking bowl. I have some box elder from my brother's property over in Dexter, stored at his place hope he doesn't charge me rent, and I hope it has that same red grain in it that yours does.
