Project Information

Hello All,

Here's a Steamer Chest I built from plans purchased from Rocklers Store. I made some changes to the build, making the camel top about an inch higher. The woods I used were Birds eye Maple, Curly Cherry, Imbuia and Aromatic Cedar.

I used it on our boat this year for storage and had a black cover over it. For some reason I had some of my lacquer bubble up on the top and am thinking the heat did this. Not a big problem so far. Maybe a white cover would keep more of the heat off of it.

Very nice.

Lacquer will outgass for months if exposed to heat, especially under the sun. Been there.

Curly Maple?? Birds Eye Maple and there was too much… expensive stuff, but when your building something that you'll hope turn into a family heirloom you don't much care…. I will say that that the wood materials cost around $500.00 dollars. Hardware, another $150.00

It's beautiful. Where did you get the hardware. I've been looking for an online store that has stuff like that in brass and bronze.

eddie,

Yes, I did add the inner compartment. I can't remember if the plans came with a full tray type insert or not. The plans were only about 9 bucks at Rockler Woodworking.
