Project Information

I have had a long narrow piece of box elder laying around the shop for several years trying to decide what to do with it. I decided to make the most out of the piece and turned it rectangular. This piece is 16 inches long, 6 inches wide and about 1/8" thick. There is a red streak that runs completely across the piece and a lot of worm holes. The trick to turning a square or rectangular piece is to turn as fast as the lathe will go (or as fast as you are brave enough!). You have to remember that any part of your body that ventures on the back side of the tool rest belongs to the wood - at 3000 rpm it a piece like this will cause some serious damage to body parts. Piece is sanded through 320 grit and has several coats of mimwax semi-gloss ***************.

That is a very interesting piece. I like it.

Although I'm not a turner, I can see how this could be a challenge & a dangerous undertaking!!!

Nicely done.
