Project Information

Here is a small marquetry saw I use all the time. Just thought someone out there might be interested. The throat is 12 inches and for bigger projects such as the bird tray, I made a table extension and a 30 inch saw which are both added to the saw you see here. In 5 minutes the conversion is done. The saw is mounted at 12 degrees to the table. It is operated manually by moving it up and down by a small wood knob situated along the lower arm under the work table. In other words this saw is basically just like holding a fret saw at 12 degrees. All it does is assure you that you are always at the constant angle. This allows you to do double layered marquetry. I am not very good at instructing so I hope this is clear enough to make sense. For more information here is The Marquetry Society of Canada web site of which I am a member. For more info on the saw look under the title (Gadgets and Tools). I hope this posting will encourage some of you to maybe venture into the veneer world and add a little bit of extra to some your projects.
It is also a great way to do woodwork on the road, camping, in your RV, condo, apartment. Well you get the drift.

Click on the link below. It is a You Tube video posted by (woodenwizard) of L J showing not only the beautiful saw he created but also it's function and use. Excellent video. The posting is very much appreciated.

Very nice John…........... and easier to travel with than a chevalet or a scroll saw.

Really nice saw build, ut how in the heck do you power it? I couldn't determine this from the photos, didn't see a foot peddle or cable.
Thanks for showing.

I'm with Oldtool….???? is it a replica? The top tension blade is held in place by a rubber band. And no motor. Hmm…A little more explaining wouldn't be amiss.

Very Cool. I have never seen such a saw before. Great idea. Definitely will check out the website.

I can't figure it out either.. Maybe you are supposed to move the wood up and down (jk)... An explanation would be appreciated.

Looks to me like a rocking action operated by hand like a hand fret saw with angle control.

Is that right John?

John mentioned that he has a knob on the lower arm that he uses to work the saw by hand. I would prefer a spring or rubber band to return the saw arm and some kind of foot pedal to operate the saw, thus leaving both hands free to handle the work piece.

Very similar to the saw I made and use. I posted a video of how mine works. Appears to be very similar. This saw really takes the effort out of marquetry.

I'm a little late to the party, but this looks like a great build and I liked the clever adjustable mouth opening too. I do think that a foot operated saw action would be a benefit so you could use both hands to steer the workpiece, but that might not be a problem for you.
